Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) announces the annual work plan and budget for 2019

The Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) Annual Work Plan & Budget 2019 is now published. It highlights the further development in sustainable biomass valorization and the creation of new value chains. The workplan also emphasizes the integration of the primary sector, biomass feedstock suppliers, at the front end of the value chain, whilst also stimulating partnerships with end market actors to create a ‘market pull’ for bio-based products for specific applications.

The outlined scientific priorities and impact for 2019 are based on four main strategic orientations:

Fostering the supply of sustainable biomass feedstock to feed both existing and new value chains
Optimizing efficient processing for integrated biorefineries by research, development and innovation
Developing innovative bio-based products for identified market applications
Creating and accelerating the market-uptake of bio-based products and applications

Aligned with the above goals, Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) has also communicated a new vision document under the title “The circular Bio-society in 2050” with five key drivers to realize the following vision: ‘By 2050, Europe will be a competitive, circular bio-based society with informed citizens choosing a sustainable way of life, thereby supporting an economy that not only provides jobs but enhances the wellbeing of society and the environment’.

As for the current status of bioeconomy, information can be accessed in the recently published BBI JU country fact sheets that refer to the current state of play and potential of the bioeconomy as well as the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking activities across Europe.

Enabling a sustainable, circular and integrated Bioeconomy has been a long-standing focus area for SusChem ETP, also included in the SusChem Strategic Research Innovation Agenda (SIRA). SusChem has therefore been supporting the relevant technology developments and specifically the contribution of Sustainable Chemistry and Industrial Biotechnology towards more sustainable value chains for biomass valorization.
